AWS
AWS — Organization. exposure: Coding agent strategy dependent on Anthropic; must either see Anthropic win the neutral IDE market, or consolidate its own vertical stack · role: Acquirer of DuckLabs, customer then sponsor of the Iceberg extension; uses DuckDB internally and targets developers "and increasingly agents" · sector: Cloud / Development tools
On 26 August 2026, Andy Warfield, an S3 engineer at AWS, published a guest post on All Things Distributed announcing that DuckLabs, the team that develops DuckDB, was joining AWS as a subsidiary, with the project staying open source under the MIT license and in the custody of the DuckDB Foundation. AWS had already been a DuckDB customer and then a sponsor of its Iceberg extension, in the wake of S3 Tables; that extension supports Iceberg v2 and v3 and exceeds 800,000 downloads per week. Warfield frames the stakes as moving ratios rather than invariants: a current instance offers roughly fifty times the memory, cores and network bandwidth of the largest EC2 instance of 2007.
The other recurring thread is the coding-agent stack. AWS launched Kiro in July 2025, built on Code OSS and running Claude Sonnet 4.0 and 3.7 from Anthropic, with usage pricing at 50 agentic interactions free per month, $19 for 1,000 and $39 for 3,000. Kate Holterhoff recorded the later addition of a Vibe mode, folding vibe coding into the same IDE as spec coding.
That model dependency is where the sources locate the strain. Reading the SpaceX-Cursor deal on 29 April 2026, Mitch Ashley of The Futurum Group ranks AWS the most exposed vendor through its reliance on Anthropic, with Google the most protected. AWS sits inside AAIF, supports MCP's governance there, and relies on the model layer it does not own.
