In November 2025, Finout put a number on what it calls the Cost Iceberg: more than 80% of the real cost of an agentic system sits below the waterline, in custom integration work, expert supervision, MLOps, compliance, observability, and scope creep. The total lands at 5 to 10 times the direct cloud bill. The same guide stacks token multipliers: a chatbot answering in 200 tokens during a demo consumes 1,200 in production, an agent issues roughly five LLM calls where a workflow issues one, and the FinOps Foundation observes a 30× to 200× spread between an unoptimized and a well-optimized deployment.

The April 2026 note turns that measurement problem into an allocation problem. Finout argues that three properties break the assumptions of cloud FinOps: the cost of a call is non-deterministic, nothing taggable is provisioned at the point of use (running Cursor or Claude Code creates no cloud resource carrying metadata), and consumption does not map to environments. The figure that kills per-seat chargeback: a developer working greenfield burns 5 to 10 times the tokens of a developer doing code review.

The proposed fix moves allocation off the source and into rules: normalize vendor invoices alongside cloud spend, express ownership in the team taxonomy, bind agent activity to identity (SSO, API key, seat) correlated with HR records, and book embedded-agent spend as product COGS. Finout positions MegaBill and Virtual Tags as the tooling for exactly that, so the diagnosis and the product arrive together.
