Ramp — Organization. sector: Fintech (cards and expense management)

Ramp opened Inspect, an in-house background coding agent, to its own engineers in November 2025. Engineers stayed free to pick their own tools, yet 75% of merged pull requests now come out of Inspect sessions, against roughly 60% in January. More than 80% of Inspect itself is written in Inspect sessions, the platform crossed a million sessions in July, and a team of 5.5 people maintains it alongside over 150 internal contributors.

Three constraints pushed the build, according to CTO Rahul Sengottuvelu, head of engineering Hamid Dadkhah and founding engineer Zach Bruggeman: local machines could sustain only one or two Claude Code sessions, the web team wanted frontend tooling designers could use, and rising complexity called for remote development environments. The first version, a Chrome extension where a user selected a page region to modify, was not adopted. Engineers already knew how to edit a file, and the local install deterred non-developers. Version two moved to a remote environment with an agent on top, built over OpenCode.

The stated architecture principle is that agents get the same context and the same tools as engineers. Inspect runs in remote sandboxes, holds the same integrations a Ramp engineer holds, and verifies its own changes: tests, telemetry and feature flags on the backend, screenshots and previews on the frontend. More than 200 internal agents sit on the platform, among them ReviewBuddy, Oncall Assistant and Testo. Intercom reached comparable ground by another route: 93.6% agent-driven pull requests, built on a private marketplace of Claude Code configurations rather than an in-house agent.
