Stripe — Organization. positioning: Co-author of the Agentic Commerce Protocol with OpenAI, and simultaneously issuer (Issuing) and wallet (Link): holds the card rails that machine-native protocols claim to replace · role: Early tester (50M-line Ruby migration) · sector: Payments; protocol partner
Stripe co-authored the Agentic Commerce Protocol with OpenAI on 29 September 2025, then seven months later shipped an adapter to the card rails that protocol would displace. On 29 April 2026, Dan Hill, Product Manager for Link Consumer Product, announced Link wallet for agents, built on Issuing for agents: the consumer grants access through OAuth, the agent receives a single-use card or a Shared Payment Token scoped by amount, currency and merchant, and never sees raw credentials. Every request requires human review before the credential is shared, which forecloses micropayments. Link claims more than 200 million consumers.
The second thread has nothing to do with payments. Minions, Stripe's one-shot coding agents described by Alistair Gray in February 2026, merged more than 1,000 pull requests a week, then more than 1,300 ten days later. They run unsupervised on ephemeral devboxes against a Ruby codebase of hundreds of millions of lines typed with Sorbet, with Toolshed exposing roughly 500 MCP tools and rule files standardized on format Cursor (règles), synced to Claude Code. Stripe also reported that Claude Fable 5 migrated a 50 million line Ruby codebase in one day, against two months for a team. Bill Staples of GitLab reads Stripe's experiments as showing where the next constraints reappear: environment, CI, review, governance.
The two threads never meet in the sources: an organization that owns the rails agentic commerce runs on, and one that has handed its own code to agents.
