Tokenomics Foundation — Organization. nature: Linux Foundation project, announced 2026-06-03
The Tokenomics Foundation was announced on 3 June 2026 as a Linux Foundation project, operated in close partnership with the FinOps Foundation. Its stated mission is to establish open industry standards, benchmarks and best practices for the economics of AI infrastructure, connecting token production, consumption and monetisation back to business value.
The concrete deliverable named on its About page is an extension of the FinOps Foundation's «spécification FOCUS», the open standard for variable technology spend. That choice is what makes the launch legible: rather than inventing vocabulary, the foundation stretches an existing cloud-cost specification into token-based AI. Governance splits between a «Governing Board», which handles industry direction and fund allocation, and a Technical Committee, which owns the open specs and benchmarks.
Two of the five founding principles cut against the reflex of the early adoption phase. "Visibility comes before optimisation. Teams cannot manage what they cannot see." And "value matters more than volume": more tokens, more calls and more automation do not produce better outcomes. The related claim is sharper still, that the best AI system is not the one running the most expensive model, which turns model selection into a routing problem.
Olivier Rafal, writing for WeNvision the day after the announcement, reads the same event through a management lens and pushes past the cost framing: the point of FinOps is efficiency, not reduction, and technical standards alone will not fix a Target Operating Model that was never rebuilt for agentic work.
