Boris Cherny

Boris Cherny created Claude Code at Anthropic and now heads it. Interviewed at a Sequoia event by Lauren Reader in May 2026, he said "coding is solved", reported writing no code himself in 2026, and gave a record of 150 PRs in a single day. He told Y Combinator the tool began in September 2024 as a terminal chat for testing the Anthropic API, and that its features came from watching what users already improvised: plan mode took 30 minutes on a Sunday evening after he noticed the pattern in GitHub issues.

His claims arrive as a ladder other people then climb or dispute. "Steps of AI Adoption" grades maturity by the order of magnitude of agents one engineer drives, from 0 to 1,000 or more; he places Anthropic at step 3 and himself at step 4. Andrew Ng credits him, with Peter Steinberger, for the spread of Loop Engineering, and Shubham Saboo recasts Loop Engineering as the decisive product-manager skill. Cherny's own phrasing is blunter: "loops are the future", and his focus moved to writing loops rather than prompting directly.

He locates Anthropic's advantage in organization and process rather than technology, on the grounds that every competitor has the same models. The commercial side is less settled. In April he defended a usage restriction by saying subscriptions "weren't built for the usage patterns of these third-party tools"; in June, Anthropic paused an Agent SDK billing change on the day it was due to take effect.
