Gregor Hohpe

Gregor Hohpe closed The Magic of Platforms (keynote PlatformCon 2022) with a definition he keeps returning to: architecture is a series of non-trivial decisions, and a document qualifies as architecture only if it carries such decisions along with their justification. He is an architect and Enterprise Strategist at Amazon Web Services, author of Enterprise Integration Patterns, The Software Architect Elevator, and Platform Strategy.

His reading of generative AI cuts against the obvious one. Hohpe argues that AI shifts the architect's value toward decisions, trade-offs, and communication rather than code. His Craft Conference 2026 phrasing: developers interact mainly with machines (compilers, interpreters, GenAI), while architects communicate with humans, sponsors, stakeholders, regulators. Generated code embeds architecture decisions by default, and he wants those decisions made conscious and written down as ADRs.

Two older ideas gain weight under that framing. The options metaphor (2016, argued through a Black-Scholes analogy) holds that the value of the options architecture sells rises with technological volatility, so uncertainty is a reason to invest more in architecture. And his QCon SF 2024 thesis, that architects make everyone else smarter by sharing decision models and revealing blind spots, matters more once code becomes abundant.

The warning is blunter: an AI-driven SDLC punishes bad habits much faster than a traditional one. Hohpe expects the winners to be defined by their speed in moving from experimentation to governed production. SFEIR built its own re-reading of the architect's role on his elevator framework.
