Code generation does not make developers obsolete; it changes the modalities. Programming stays a demanding activity whether the language is Python, Java, or natural language.

His central claim concerns abstraction. Every historical jump (assembler to C, C to high-level languages, procedural to object) hit its ceiling, and natural language is no exception: specifying a system precisely can cost as much cognitive work as programming it directly. Abstraction rises, intrinsic complexity stays.

Caseau splits the emerging workforce into Computer System Engineers who keep building critical backbones in traditional code assisted by AI, Solutions Engineers who orchestrate agents mostly in natural language, and citizen developers reaching sophisticated systems without advanced computing skills. Simple user interface tasks disappear into agent intermediation, moderately complex ones migrate to no-code tools, and only genuinely complex cases remain with professionals.

Two of his assertions cut against prevailing discourse: the agentic transition is overestimated, and the weight of legacy systems is underestimated. Writing code is relatively trivial next to maintaining it, where context governs the work.

He supports a spec-driven approach to AI, the same discipline Soufiane Keli documents at OCTO Technology, where Loïc Lefloch and Simon Belbeoch produced nearly all code by generation in a brownfield project. The tension sits in the specification itself: Keli's method invests everything in writing them, Caseau doubts natural language can always carry them.
