Claude Cowork — Technology. category: Knowledge work agent · category: Offering described by the author as limited to orchestration · role: Environment in which a CFO built and deployed their financial tool over a two-month session, until saturation
Aaron Levie, CEO of Box, places Claude Cowork in a lineage that began with coding agents. Writing on 7 March 2026, he describes an architecture first defined by Claude Code, Devin, Codex, Cursor and Replit (sandboxed compute, the ability to write and run code, API and CLI access, file management, long-term memory) spreading to all knowledge work through agents like Claude Cowork, Perplexity Computer, Manus and OpenClaw. The inheritance is the notable part: a knowledge-work agent standing on developer-tool foundations.
Donn Felker's essay of 14 September 2026 records what a non-developer did with those foundations. He reports a CFO who built and deployed a financial operations tool, then stalled after two months inside a single Claude Cowork session, unable to say where the code lived. Felker reads the episode as the lever swinging back toward engineering, and lists what the session never supplied: architecture, guardrails, backups, versioning, governance, observability.
Fred Cavazza, posting on X on 9 October 2026, puts the product on a ladder of four functional modalities and stops it one rung below the top. In his reading Claude Cowork and ChatGPT Work remain confined to orchestration, while the synthetic collaborators Google presented at Gemini at Work hold their own digital identity (email, calendar, storage, memory). Cavazza does not source that positioning.
Felker and Cavazza reach the same boundary from opposite directions: the point where orchestration stops and someone has to know where the code lives.
