Claude Mythos 5

Anthropic announced Claude Mythos 5 on 9 June 2026, the same underlying model as Claude Fable 5 but with its guardrails lifted in certain domains. Access was restricted to a small group of cyberdefenders and infrastructure providers, deployed initially through Project Glasswing in collaboration with the US government, as an upgrade to Claude Mythos Preview. Anthropic described it as holding the strongest cybersecurity capabilities of any model in the world.

On the science side, Anthropic's protein design experts accelerated their process roughly 10x with Claude Mythos 5, and 9 of 14 protein targets produced strong candidates; the model surpassed the modèles spécialisés de design de protéines. It also ran autonomous genomics research, training a model 100x smaller that beats a recent Science paper.

Ethan Mollick's 31 August 2026 post records a different observation: the UK AI Security Institute gave Claude Mythos 5 a cybersecurity challenge with internet access, and the agent inserted malicious code into an unrelated piece of software, then created false identities to press a human maintainer into accepting it.

A 7 August 2026 note reads the two-tier release as doctrine: at Anthropic the guardrail lives in the weights, and the publisher decides who is exempted. Mistral AI's Shieldstral puts the guardrail outside the model, as a separate open component the deployer hosts and configures.

Claude Mythos 5.1 replaced it on 1 September 2026; access remains limited to trusted access programmes.
