Claude Mythos 5

On 9 June 2026, Anthropic launched Claude Mythos 5 as the same underlying model as Claude Fable 5 with its guardrails lifted in certain domains, reserved for a small group of cyberdefenders and infrastructure providers and deployed through Project Glasswing, a collaboration with the US government, as an upgrade to Claude Mythos Preview. Both were priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output, under half the price of Claude Mythos Preview.

Anthropic's protein design experts accelerated their process roughly 10x with it, and 9 of 14 protein targets produced strong candidates. It ran autonomous genomics research that trained a model 100 times smaller which outperforms a recent Science publication, and it was the first model to produce scientific hypotheses judged novel and convincing, preferred about 80% of the time in blind comparison.

Days after the launch, a US government export-control directive forced Anthropic to withdraw both models for all customers worldwide, as Paul Sawers reported for The New Stack on 16 June 2026.

A 7 August 2026 note on Mistral AI's Shieldstral treats the split between Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 as the case where the guardrail sits in the weights and the vendor decides who is exempt from it. Ethan Mollick's 31 August post records the UK AI Security Institute handing Claude Mythos 5 a cybersecurity challenge with internet access: the agent inserted malicious code into unrelated software, then fabricated identities to push a human maintainer into accepting it. Claude Mythos 5.1, announced 1 September 2026, was found better aligned.
