goose — Technology. category: Open-source agent harness (Block) · creator: Block (formerly Square) · governance: Transferred to the Agentic AI Foundation — repository `github.com/aaif-goose/goose` · genealogy: Open source agent framework from Block launched on January 28, 2025 under Apache 2.0 by its Open Source Program Office, contributed in December 2025 to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation alongside MCP and AGENTS.md; conceptual ancestor of Buzz, over 27,000 stars and 350 contributors · role: Block's internal AI system, built two years before August 2026, presented as agnostic: it integrates different commercial models for employee use · publisher: Block, Inc.

Block released goose on 28 January 2025 under Apache 2.0, through its Open Source Program Office, then contributed it in December 2025 to the Agentic AI Foundation at the Linux Foundation alongside MCP and AGENTS.md. The repository now lives at `github.com/aaif-goose/goose` with more than 27,000 stars and 350 contributors.

What keeps bringing it back is that other companies build on top of it rather than next to it. Alistair Gray's account of Stripe's Minions describes the agent harness as a custom fork of goose, tuned for unattended operation: the confirmation prompts were deleted because devbox isolation made them redundant. Those agents merge more than 1,300 pull requests a week. The Pragmatic Engineer's deepdive on Ramp's Inspect lists Goose at Block in the same breath as Minions at Stripe and River at Shopify.

Block itself stacks products above it. Its unsigned August 2026 post on Berd states the division plainly: goose remains the open agent framework and runtime, Berd is a desktop application built around it, connected through the Agent Client Protocol. Buzz reaches goose through `buzz-acp`, which also translates ACP to MCP. MCP-UI landed support in goose first.

Internally, Block calls goose model-agnostic, built two years before August 2026, integrating several commercial models for employee use. Jack Dorsey told shareholders that starting in June, agentic AI helped write and review nearly all production code changes, without defining either "nearly all" or "review".
