Microsoft Foundry

Microsoft Foundry is what Azure AI Foundry became on 1 January 2026, and the rename accompanied a settled shape: a managed isolated runtime, session, user and procedural memory, and agent identity carried by Entra Agent ID.

Janakiram MSV counts nine months in which Amazon, Microsoft and Google each launched or renamed an enterprise agent platform, and reads the result as convergence: runtime, memory, tool gateway, identity, observability and governance now appear in Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, Microsoft Foundry and the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform under different names. He sets this against the PaaS inflection of 2011-2016, when Cloud Foundry and Heroku unified scattered pieces around an application contract. The agent ecosystem is reaching the same inflection with no equivalent contract, and no open source project has claimed one. The bill is specific: session state, traces and identity all land with a single vendor, so moving an agent a year later means rebuilding it.

The second reason the platform keeps surfacing is the Mistral and Microsoft agreement announced on 21 July 2026. Mistral Medium 3.5 and Mistral OCR 4 ship inside Foundry and become reachable from Copilot Studio for business agents. Brad Smith confirmed no new Microsoft equity stake, which leaves Mistral's governance intact. SFEIR's reading separates four sovereignties (model, execution, infrastructure, commercial relationship) and notes that a European model here runs on an American hyperscaler's infrastructure; the open-weights nature of Mistral's weights is what keeps the exit door credible.
