On 4 August 2026, during Agents Week, Will Papper announced Cloudflare Wallets: virtual wallets tied to an agent's API key, with a ceiling set by the account holder, settling in stablecoin over the x402 protocol. The handle format `research.example.cloudflare.pay` borrows from the pairing of URL and IP address in DNS. What existed that day was handle reservation; payments, guardrails and funding ramps were announced.

The surface underneath was already in place. Cloudflare converts HTML to Markdown at the edge for agents sending `Accept: text/markdown` (Markdown for Agents, February 2026), claiming an 80% token reduction, publishes Content Signals for `ai-train`, `search` and `ai-input` preferences, and runs Toolshed, over 400 MCP tools. Claude Code was sending that header before the feature shipped.

Michelle Chen, Alex Reneau and Kevin Flansburg released Clef and Clef-flash on 1 October 2026, Apache 2.0 decision models on Workers AI with median latencies of 209.3 ms and 38.8 ms. Clef classifies domains for Threat Intelligence in 2.2 seconds against 4.7 for gpt-oss-120b. Cloudflare's CI orchestration around OpenCode logged 131,246 reviews across 48,095 pull requests in 5,169 repositories in one month.

One actor would hold the buyer's wallet, the seller's gateway, the identity namespace and the bot control that sets the friction for unidentified agents. The claim that bots now produce most web traffic arrives unsourced.
