Moonshot AI

Moonshot AI was founded in Beijing in March 2023 by Yang Zhilin, and it carries the "AI Tiger" label given to Chinese labs of its generation. It publishes the Kimi chatbot and the K2/K3 open-weights series on a fast cadence, roughly one flagship every two months.

The launch of Kimi K3 on 16 July 2026 is what the source notes examine most closely. Moonshot AI states around 2.8 trillion parameters, a one-million-token context, and a hybrid-attention MoE architecture. SFEIR, an Anthropic and Google Cloud partner, treats those numbers as claims rather than facts: no complete official benchmark table accompanied the launch, and the circulating scores came from community arenas. Its argument turns on reversibility rather than ranking. A proprietary model is consumed through an API; open weights can be recovered as an option, run and ported, at the cost of heavy infrastructure for 2.8 trillion parameters. SFEIR concludes that the model layer has become a commodity and that the durable advantage sits in the engineering around it (Context Engineering, harness, cost governance).

Mozilla's The state of open source AI (v1.0.1, July 2026) places the same model at 57 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index against 61 for the best closed model, Claude Opus 5, fourth overall, with the Epoch Capabilities Index gap at six points, "about one release cycle".

Moonshot AI also denies an allegation of covert extraction. That denial sits unresolved in the sources.
