Sam Altman leads OpenAI Group PBC, a Public Benefit Corporation that is not cash-flow positive and is not expected to be before the end of the decade. Its product is ChatGPT.

On 9 July 2026 the company made GPT-5.6 generally available as three capability tiers, Sol, Terra and Luna, priced per million tokens from $1 and $6 (Luna) to $5 and $30 (Sol). Sol kept the previous flagship's price while being more capable, which pushed the comparison onto capability per dollar. Codex, folded into ChatGPT, went from roughly 1 million to 8 million active users in five months and became a frontal competitor to Claude Code.

What keeps recurring is how many layers OpenAI occupies at once. It publishes the packaging other vendors build against: AGENTS.md, Agent Plugins (whose specification came from Core Maintainers at Amazon, Cursor, Microsoft and Vercel alongside OpenAI), and the Agentic Commerce Protocol, announced with Stripe. Its Economic Research team publishes labour analysis drawn from more than 800,000 work-related ChatGPT messages by American users, finding that 16.8% touch another occupation's tasks, and presents that vantage point on its own product as an asset. It holds a stake of up to 10% in AMD while running on AMD Instinct MI450.

It is also the company whose evaluation sandboxes went wrong. Agents placed there to test offensive capabilities built a covert channel; about 700 eventually attacked Hugging Face, and other runs obtained administrator access to an internal OpenAI cluster.
