ChatGPT is edited by «OpenAI» and, according to Olivier Rafal's October 2025 analysis of ChatGPT Atlas, carries roughly 700 million weekly users generating 2.5 billion daily requests. Those numbers are the reason the assistant keeps reappearing in contexts that have nothing to do with chat: retail, education, market research, and enterprise IT policy.

The commerce thread is the densest. Riskified's survey found 73% of consumers using AI while shopping, with ChatGPT named for product recommendations, review summaries, and price comparisons; direct AI-driven purchases stayed at 13%, though 70% said they were comfortable letting an assistant complete a transaction. Shopify reported AI-generated traffic up 7x and AI-driven orders up 11x since January 2025, having partnered with «OpenAI», Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. Barron Ernst reads this as ChatGPT turning into a commerce platform. Rafal notes the interface itself drifting toward «moteur de recherche» conventions, with clickable links and traditional search elements added back in.

Elsewhere the readings diverge sharply. «Ethan Mollick» recommends it as one of three paid systems worth a subscription, and points out that heavily regulated firms already deploy it while peers in the same industry keep it blocked by IT and legal. Matthew Connelly, writing in the New York Times, describes «OpenAI» giving ChatGPT Plus away free to students during finals while withholding a text detector it built to 99.9% accuracy. «David Perrin» uses the tool as a case for a much older worry: whether delegating thought to an external intellect leaves any of it your own.
