Jack Clark

Jack Clark co-founded Anthropic and sits on the AI Index Steering Committee. In March 2026 he took charge of the Anthropic Institute, an entity Anthropic opened while its ARR climbed from 9 B$ at the end of 2025 to 30 B$. Jasmine Sun records that detail in her NYT Opinion piece of 30 April 2026 alongside a pointed omission: the Institute launched without an economic policy paper, at the moment Dario Amodei was publicly forecasting "a white-collar blood bath" and the disappearance of half of junior white-collar jobs by 2030. Anthropic's political counterweight in that account is financial, a 20 M$ contribution backing New York candidate Alex Bores against a pro-AI PAC spending over 2 M$ to defeat him.

That placement is what makes Jack Clark recurrent here. He occupies two positions at once: inside a frontier lab whose economics the reporting treats as part of the problem, and inside the Stanford HAI measurement apparatus that documents the shift of AI research from academia to industry, where no university can fund a 100 M$+ training run and industry published 5.2 times more AI papers than academia in 2024.

He also carries a forecast on the record: recursive self-improvement in under two years. Sun's argument runs the other way, that a permanent underclass is a policy choice rather than a technological outcome.
