Linux — Technology. agentic advantage: 40 million lines fully present in the pre-training of frontier models; the most reviewed kernel in history, estimated 15 000 Md$ in savings depending on it · category: Open source operating system kernel

Forty million lines of kernel code sit inside the pre-training corpus of every frontier model, and that is the specific reason David Heinemeier Hansson built Omarchy on Linux: the agents that wrote its Quattro release already knew the system they were targeting. Quattro was written exclusively by agents, and in four weeks the distribution accumulated more than 4,000 plugins, most of them from people who do not program. Linux is also the most reviewed kernel in history, with an estimated $15,000 billion of economy depending on it.

Linus Torvalds fixed the project's position on 14 July 2026, in a linux-media thread about an LLM tool for maintainers: Linux is not an anti-AI project. He called AI a tool like any other and a clearly useful one, conceded that it is painful (maintainer load, and LLMs that keep surfacing embarrassing bugs), and told objectors to fork or leave. No one is forced to use it, and he said he would very loudly ignore anyone trying to stop others from using it.

By October 2026 the Assisted-by tag was being dropped. Sasha Levin announced the Maintainers Summit consensus to deprecate it; the rule had been proposed in July 2025 and written into the documentation in January 2026. Jeff Layton of Red Hat argued it was unevenly followed, gave free advertising to proprietary LLM vendors, and collected information whose value was unestablished. Laurent Pinchart refused to remove disclosure without a replacement mechanism. Torvalds called that kind of rule absurd and asked only that contributors understand what they are doing.
