MCP — Technology. category: Service-exposure protocol for agents · category: Tooling protocol whose article sets the minimal stack useful to the workflow · launch_date: November 2024 · function: Portable connector protocol (Codex ↔ Claude Code) · long_form: Model Context Protocol · limit: Semi-typed interactions losing fidelity relative to domain objects · nature: open protocol · full name: Model Context Protocol · objective: structured access to tools/data/APIs for AI agents

The Model Context Protocol launched in November 2024 as an open protocol giving AI agents structured access to tools, data and APIs. «Peter Aideloje», writing for LogRocket in September 2025, pushed the claim furthest: an agent that discovers and invokes tools on a server needs no HTML parsing and no simulated clicks, so frontend engineers should expect to ship MCP servers with clear schemas of tools, resources and prompts rather than pixel-perfect interfaces. Schema precision replaces layout polish.

The adoption evidence accumulates across sources with different vantage points. Katelyn Lesse of Anthropic lists MCP as one of three context innovations behind agentic systems, alongside the Memory tool and Context Editing. Google DeepMind shipped native MCP support in the «Interactions API» in December 2025. Cloudflare launched «Toolshed», over 400 MCP tools, in February 2026. Aaron Levie of Box argues that CLI and MCP servers have become mandatory: without an API, a feature does not exist for agents.

The counter-current is equally consistent. Simon Willison argued in October 2025 that «Claude Skills» might be the bigger deal, since they need no server and no protocol, cost few tokens, and are not tied to one vendor. Pasquale Pillitteri frames MCP as a layer over Semrush and Ahrefs, not a replacement. Two recorded weaknesses stay open: excessive token overhead, and semi-typed interactions that lose fidelity against real domain objects.
