OpenClaw — Technology. category: 24/7 persistent AI agent · category: Personal agent with computer access, origin of the Clawlikes · description: Project (cited by Shipper) — 44,469 PRs in May 2026 vs Kubernetes 5,200 PRs over all of 2022 — volumetric proof of *"more work, not less"* · role: Personal agent cited by Stripe as an example beneficiary of the Link wallet for agents; unelaborated mention in the article
44,469 pull requests in May 2026: that is the figure Dan Shipper attaches to OpenClaw in "After Automation", set against the 5,200 PRs Kubernetes received across the whole of 2022. He reads it as volumetric proof of "more work, not less".
OpenClaw, created by Peter Steinberger, is a personal agent with access to a computer and to its owner's accounts, running 24/7 in a persistent environment. Ethan Mollick, writing on 1 October 2026, treats it as the origin of a category he names Clawlikes: Meta's Muse, OpenAI's dots, Grok Bot, Instinct and Gemini Spark all extend it. Tony Seale lists it beside Claude Code, Codex and Hermes as evidence that leading practitioners dropped orchestration frameworks for the model-in-harness pattern. Aaron Levie counts it among the agents that carried the coding-agent architecture into knowledge work.
The second reason it keeps surfacing is vocabulary. Andrew Ng credits the spread of the term Loop Engineering to Boris Cherny, creator of Claude Code, and to Steinberger.
What the sources leave open is the product question. Ryan Sarver, on 29 September 2026, argues that ownership can produce the better product, then concedes that OpenClaw resembles Linux and that an Apple-style experience is still missing. He calls for a productized version whose revenue comes only from its user, who can leave with everything. Stripe names OpenClaw as a beneficiary of the Link wallet for agents and says nothing further about it.
