Agent

Agent — Concept. definition: Executes tasks with tools and applications, variable autonomy · level: 3 — step-by-step execution with approval

Level 3 of the eight-level adoption scale that Mike Taylor, Laura Entis and Claude published for Every on 2 June 2026: an agent executes step by step and waits for approval. The scale's single axis is delegation and trust, so the level marks how much of your work you have handed over, not how advanced your setup is. Taylor and Entis say so directly: "a higher level isn't necessarily better", and the right level is the one that fits the work.

The definition that recurs is deliberately thin. An agent executes tasks by mobilizing tools and applications, with autonomy that varies. Fred Cavazza, writing on X on 9 October 2026, uses that same formulation to place agents second in a ladder of four functional modalities, below orchestrators (which break a complex need into a plan and distribute it among specialized agents) and synthetic collaborators (persistent, with their own email, calendar, storage and memory).

What separates an agent from a chatbot, in Rohit's April 2026 formulation, is structural: "A chatbot waits for a prompt. An agent waits for a goal. The difference is the loop."

Two cautions travel with the concept. Taylor and Entis compare trusting an agent to onboarding an intern, and warn against the manager who brags about eight interns working overnight on a key project without checking their output. Cavazza closes on reliability and profitability at scale, both still undemonstrated.
