Andrew Ng

Andrew Ng founded DeepLearning.AI, cofounded Coursera and Google Brain, and is a general partner at AI Fund. Four notes in five months follow one argument he built across The Batch: what coding agents actually do to a developer's work.

It opened on 24 April 2026 (issue 350) with a ranking. Agents accelerate frontend most, backend moderately, infrastructure little, and leave the conceptual work of research largely human. On 8 May (issue 352) Ng rejected the jobpocalypse reading, citing US unemployment at 4.3% and naming three structural reasons the narrative circulates anyway: AI labs gain from looking disruptive, enterprise vendors anchor $10,000+ annual pricing on the salary of the employee they claim to replace, and companies relabel 2020-2022 overhiring as AI efficiency. His counter-coinage was "AI jobapalooza". On 26 June (issue 359) he set out three product development loops and argued that humans hold a "context advantage" over AI, a phrase he prefers to "taste" because it names a gap that can be closed. More engineers, he wrote, are taking on a partial product management role.

The AI Engineering Skills Map, posted 14 August 2026, closes the arc with four skills drawn from an analysis of more than 10,000 job postings. A terminology note carries the sharper claim: skills rather than the "AI Engineer" role, since every developer should know how to work with the cloud while few hold the Cloud engineer title. No weightings are published, the clustering is called informal, and Ng declares his interest: DeepLearning.AI's focus is teaching these skills.
