Gemini

In a16z's fifth Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps ranking, published 27 August 2025, Gemini takes second place behind ChatGPT in both web visits and mobile active users. That position is the plainest measure of what Google's model family has become, and the source notes reach it from very different angles.

Enterprise distribution is where the figures are largest. At Gemini at Work 2026 on 8 October 2026, Thomas Kurian said close to 90% of the Fortune 100 use Gemini Enterprise and that nearly 500 customers each processed more than a trillion tokens over the year. The Gemini agent he introduced there treats the model as a choice separate from the agent: it picks per task between Gemini models and Anthropic's Claude models.

Gemini also turns up as a component inside other products. Code Wiki, which Google put into public preview on 13 November 2025, uses it to power a chat grounded in a repository's own generated wiki. Andrej Karpathy describes handing a menu photo straight to Gemini and asking Nanobanana to overlay the dishes, which made MenuGen, the app he built by vibe coding, pointless: "That app shouldn't exist."

The cost picture stays unresolved. Kurian cites a 98% fall in price per token since 2024, while Guillaume Geudin's January 2026 tribune in CIO Online counts Google Gemini increases of 20 to 45% on IT invoices. Ethan Mollick names Gemini one of three systems worth a paid subscription, and warns that users are defaulted onto smaller models such as Gemini Flash.
