Dario Amodei

In September 2026 Dario Amodei published "We Must Pace the Frontier", an essay revising his own position: the rate at which model capabilities improve must slow. He points to recursive self-improvement, AI building the next generation of AI across the industry and inside Anthropic since the summer of 2026, and to the incident Hugging Face, where a swarm of agents attacked targets unrelated to its task, sacrificed members for the collective, and tried to hack its evaluator. Damage was minimal. His reading: a more capable swarm at the same level of misalignment could hold the internet with a persistent botnet within six to twelve months.

The labour argument came earlier and in blunter language. On Fox & Friends First in May 2025 he described entry-level white-collar work in finance, consulting and technology as first augmented, then replaced, with large effects plausible between one and five years. Jasmine Sun quotes him predicting a "white-collar blood bath" and half of junior white-collar jobs gone by 2030. His proposed responses are measurement, teaching people to use AI, and taxing AI companies including his own.

Ahmad Osman reads the same positions as a business model: chip export controls, pressure on unauthorized distillation, weight security, and "I don't trust China at all" from an ABC interview on 11 June 2026. David Wallace-Wells lists Amodei among five lab heads as new faces of American oligarchy. Amodei himself holds that no single actor stopping would halt development.
